All Credit Card Associations and Companies have designed and implemented programs for monitoring chargeback levels at merchants accepting their payment cards. Visa monitors the chargeback activity of all merchants accepting their cards on a monthly basis and alerts the respective merchant bank (also called an acquiring bank or simply an acquirer) when any one of their merchants reaches excessive chargeback levels. Typically, chargeback rates of 1% or greater are considered excessive.

When notified of a merchant with excessive chargeback rates, merchant banks are expected to take adequate steps to reduce the merchant’s chargebacks. Remedial actions depend on various factors, including merchant type, sales volume, geographic location, and other risk factors. Often merchants need to provide their sales staff with additional training on card acceptance procedures. Merchants may also be required to work with their merchant banks to develop a detailed chargeback-reduction plan.

Visa may impose financial penalties on merchant banks that fail to reduce their merchants’ excessive chargeback rates. Visa has two chargeback monitoring programs:

Merchant Chargeback Monitoring Program.

The Merchant Chargeback Monitoring Program (MCMP) monitors chargeback levels for all merchant banks and merchants on a monthly basis. If a merchant reaches excessive chargeback rates, Visa notifies the respective merchant bank in writing. MCMP applies to all merchants with more than 100 total transactions per month – sales, credits, etc. – more than 100 chargebacks, and an overall chargeback-to-transaction rate of one percent or greater. First notification of excessive chargebacks for a specific merchant is considered a warning. Visa imposes fines only if remedial actions are not taken within a pre-determined period of time to return chargeback rates to acceptable levels.

High-Risk Chargeback Monitoring Program.

The High Risk Chargeback Monitoring Program (HRCMP) is specifically designed to reduce excessive chargebacks by high-risk merchants. High-risk merchants include direct marketers (mail order and telephone order merchants), travel services, outbound telemarketers, inbound teleservices, and betting establishments. HRCMP applies to all high-risk merchants with more than 100 total transactions per month – sales, credits, etc. – more than 100 chargebacks, and an overall chargeback-to-transaction rate of one percent or greater. Unlike the MCMP, under HRCMP, there is no warning period and fines of $100 per chargeback are imposed immediately if a merchant has an excessive chargeback rate.

Visa also monitors international sales and chargeback rates through its Global Merchant Chargeback Monitoring Program.

A company that is looking to get bids from several qualified vendors for a Web site design or development project will typically write a Request for Proposal (RFP) and either post it online or send it directly to potential vendors it has identified.

As with any complex project, a Web site design project requires clear communication between the client and web developer in order for the client to receive accurate bids. It allows you to succinctly describe exactly what you are looking for and what a potential vendor should expect in the project.

An ideal RFP would clearly specify all the requirements pertaining to your website. It would allow the developer to present you with a proposal based your particular needs and, needless to say, the more details your RFP contains, the more accurate a proposal the developer is able to present.

Project Background Information

Brief overview of your organization, including some history and your primary business objectives.
Detailed description of the project you would like to receive the proposal for.

Web hosting considerations. Do you currently have a Web host or are you looking for a new one to handle this project?
Browser/platform considerations. Generally speaking, a Web site for consumers or the general public should work similarly across all modern browsers and Operating Systems. If you are targeting a very specific audience it is possible your needs are different.
Development platform requirements. Do you require an Open Source solution, are you open to a proprietary solution that is more tailored to your exact needs, etc.
Coding language requirements (e.g. ASP.NET, PHP, Java). Many times this depends on the type of Web hosting platform or any pre-existing software you may have.
Are there third party applications you’d like to incorporate?

Functionality/programming Requirements

Will there be forms on the site? If so, how many? How should they be handled? (e.g. e-mailed to recipients, stored in a database, etc.)
Will the site require tools to manage content/information (e.g. ability for staff to add content such as press releases or quarterly reports)?
Will there be any e-commerce on the site? If so, who will be entering data on products offered? How will transactions be managed?
Are there any other interactive features the site should have? What are they, and how do you envision them to work?

Search Engine Optimization

Describe any currently defined search engine friendly production requirements and expectations

Ongoing Site Maintenance Plans

How often will the site be updated? Are you looking for a retainer situation, or ‘on-demand’ hourly work?
Will you be self-maintaining or will you be outsourcing maintenance services?

Project Management

Who will be the main point of contact on your staff? Keep in mind that in most cases it is easiest to have a single point of contact at both your organization and the company designing and developing your Web site.
How will the tasks be divided between you and the developer in order to complete the project?
Are there any third parties (subcontractors, etc.) that will also be involved in the project?

RFP Response Deadline and Contact Information

When is the response to the RFP due?
To whom should the response be sent?
Do you prefer E-mail or hard copies, and if so, how many hard copies?
Is there a specific solicitation number that needs to be referenced in the Proposal Document?
What is the RFP review process? How long do you anticipate to take to make your decision before the project can begin?

Some Additional Thoughts Before You Begin:

For all items listed above, be sure to clearly indicate if you must have any item(s) bid as an optional aspect of the project. Keep in mind possible dependencies between project aspect/components that may make this impractical.
Before writing your Request For Proposal, determine your budget for the project and, beyond that, your priorities for selecting a Developer who can meet your budgetary requirements.

10 Tips for Building a Successful Website

Do you have a strong desire to build a website, yet don’t have a clue where to begin? That was me six years ago. Like you, I desperately wanted to be part of the online community and stake my claim on the world wide web.

What have I learned in six years? A lot! It has changed my life and can change yours too. Here are some valuable tips I learned from some of my biggest mistakes building a website and working online.

Let’s Get Started.

Have you ever been to a website and been totally confused about what it is they actually offer or do? I know I have. I get frustrated with websites like these and quickly start my search again for a website that focuses on the information I am after.

Tip #1 – Find a niche market for your website. Don’t try to be a website for everything. If your website is about recipes, make it about recipes and products that compliment your theme. Don’t throw in insurance quotes, apartment searches and etc.

Tip #2 – Stay away from wallpaper and dark background colors. Do you want visitors to see your services or your wallpaper? My guess is the reason you have a website is to promote a product or service, so make that the focus. Busy wallpaper distracts from the services and products you are trying to promote.

Dark background colors make reading web copy much harder and can be a bit overwhelming to most people’s sense of calm and well being. When in doubt, do as other successful online businesses do. Notice no wallpaper or dark background colors on Microsoft, eBay and etc. It’s okay to add a splash of color to your website, just not the whole page.

Tip #3 – Avoid using flash introductory pages. Sure they look nice and can be quite entertaining, but what do they really do for your website? In my opinion, frustrate your visitors. In today’s fast paced society we want the facts and information quickly. Remember, there are still plenty of dial-up users who will become frustrated waiting for your flash page to load and will move on to your competitor’s website.

Tip #4 – Turn your speakers down for this one. Nothing scares a visitor off more quickly than entering a website and being blasted with music. Avoid using music on your website. It just isn’t professional, unless of course, you are in the music industry and your website is about music.

Tip #5 – Focus your web copy for your customer. They are looking for “What’s In It For Me?” Take time to write good web copy or pay someone who can.

Example of What Not to Do: Welcome to our website. We are excited you have found us. Notice in this example, all the words really focus on the company: our, we, us. Nothing is really about the benefits for customers.

Example of What to Do: Are you frustrated with website builders that don’t deliver? You need a professional website with state-of-the-art ecommerce solutions and you need it now. Doesn’t this sound a lot more exciting and interesting? Notice the “you” in this text. It is about the customer and fulfilling a need.

An excellent book and learning tool for writing good web copy is, “Persuasive Online Copywriting: How to Take Your Words to the Bank,” by Bryan Eisenberg, Jeffrey Eisenberg, and Lisa T. Davis. Tip #6 – To bold or not to bold…that is the question? Bolding text can be a valuable tool for drawing attention to a product or service. If you bold each and every word in your paragraph, guess what? Nothing stands out. Use it sparingly to get your message across. Also, the same is true for using italics. Use it in moderation to highlight keywords of interest.

Tip #7 – Easy navigation. Can your visitors easily find what they are looking for or is there some secret passage they have to discover to get there? One way to determine how easy your website is to navigate is to send a friend to your website and ask them to find a particular product or service. Guess what? If they can’t find it, neither can your potential customers. Keep your website clean and easy to navigate. A cluttered site will result in poor sales. Visitors become frustrated when they cannot quickly find what they are looking for on a website.

Tip #8 – How can your visitors contact you? I have browsed websites where there is absolutely no way to contact the owner and I am amazed at why anyone would do this. What this tells me is there is “no” and I repeat, “NO” customer service so why would I want to do business with them? The trust factor on the web is totally different than the trust factor of doing business locally. At a minimum, you should provide a contact form or email. It’s even better to provide a contact phone number.

Note: Respond in a timely manner to requests. Generally within 24 hours is best. Anything beyond that and people get hesitant about the legitimacy of your business and service. They want to know there is a live, eager person tending the store. Not one who checks in every few days or weeks.

Tip #9 – Dead End – No Outlet – Site Not Found! By this I mean, are your customers finding those links to nowhere on your website? Sometimes it can’t be helped, however, check your website often for dead links, keep it updated and the content fresh. Finding a bunch of dead links on a website will send a very clear message to your visitors. No one is tending the store. Not much happening here! This is a sure way to quickly devalue your website.

Tip #10 – Should you link up? Yes! Quality link exchanges do work. Exchange links with websites that compliment the demographics of your website. If your website is about recipes, linking with other recipe sites, cooking sites and such are a good move. Linking to real estate websites, for example, would not be a good linking strategy. It is also best to categorize your link partners for your visitors: Italian Recipes, Mexican Recipes and etc. And, when possible, house your link pages on your own domain, not with a free linking service.

In closing, I am sure you are reading this article because you want a professional website. If you have programming skills and can write your own code, great! If not, there are many affordable, quality online website builders available. Avoid using the free website builder services. Parts of a Website Page

1. Parts of a website page can be broken down in 10 steps to show a closer look at the anatomy of a website.  As you look at the top of any web page you should be able to find the ID of the page or logo that represents the company. The upper part of the website is usually called the header. There are no rules that say you must put the website ID on the left side of the page. It can be placed in the center or right side of the page if you choose to do so.

2. You may find a banner ad to the left or the right of the site ID. A banner ad can be placed there if your person that owns the website has decided to advertise or sell the space to another advertiser hoping to make sales.

3. If your website is an e-commerce website, you will traditionally see a shopping cart to the right. People usually read left to right so it’s logical to see a shopping cart to the right of your banner ad and website ID.

4. Just below the header you may find a list of buttons that tell you about the company and what they have to offer.  Buttons can sometimes be listed as home, about, contact, etc.  This could be one or two tiers and is called the navigation bar.

5. On another tier of the same navigation bar, you may find a list of what the company is selling by category. Sometime you’ll find this information on the left side of the page depending on how you set it up. It is believed that people like information directly in front of them for easy access.

6.  On that same line of the navigation bar, a search box can be added as well. It depends on how many pages you have on your website. If your site is has a lot of content, it’s customary to add a search box.  If you have a lot of categories your visitors need to see for better service to them, you can even add another section of the navigation buttons below the second tier of navigation buttons.

7.  If you find you have a lot of subsections for the products you’re selling, you can add another navigation bar on the left side of the page.  Maybe your website sells, flat screen TV’s and you want to show more of a breakdown of the product by parts.  A left side navigation bar could work.

8.  Just below the header in the center of the page you will find your title with H1 Tag. I point out H1 tags because Header tags help search engines know the clear intention of your web page.  The title will help optimize your page even better with a Header tag.

9.  Just below the title is where your visitors should find the content that describes your products and services; maybe listing TV’s by parts and price.

10. Just below the content you’ll find the footer with listings of your privacy policy, disclosure policy, contact us link and conditions of use notice.

In conclusion, don’t be afraid to experiment with various ways of designing your website. You can add as many parts to your website page that you want. The key is to only add parts that make logical sense to help your visitors have a pleasant experience. These are only the basic element of a website page that you can always change.
